    hey
sensational map to put everything in perspective and to see the path they've travelled so far .. and to be able to click on each day and get all that info is great to get an understanding of how they have to work with the winds and the currents .. the only suggestion i could make is that it would be great to see what the currents AHEAD hold for them .. so a map with arrows showing the currents they are facing ahead on the remainder of the trip to auckland would be cool but if not .. no sweat .. the work you guys have done making everyone feel part of this is excellent

    cheers .. RAT-tastic

    Hi,

The more info the better, very nice and Thanks.

    Comments.

I navigated around abit, went to a wisconsin site trying to read about the around peurto rico trip. Then clicked some links at the bottom, ended up at a lawyer site. Then back clicked a bit to get back to the ratz adventure. And got a message about the Google Maps API key being used on the page as having been registered for a differant web site. I'd be happy to reproduce the message if you need details.

Other information that would be nice might be
    1 Sunrise/Sunset times
2 Hours paddled in the light/dark
    3 Air and Sea Temperatures
4 Ratz mental and physical self ratings

A link to the Expedition Analysis from the home page of Crossing the Ditch would be nice.

The current link to the Forum goes to the closed pages, not the latest.

    That's my feedback.

Oh -- and Great JOB. It's way more than I ever expected.

Hi Patrick, The extra detail is wonderful. Very useful for this land-lubber in that it helps me appreciate even more how hard these guys have to work to travel even a couple of kilometres. I find it great to be able to check daily progress - and seeing that awful detour to the NE before heading back to a better course makes me appreciate the reasons for a couple of days of low spirits. I agree that being able to see indications of currents and even wind direction/speed in the analysis would be terrific. You have done a superb job - thank you!

    Justin and James
saw the comments on the Sunday 25th evening sked report re the hot paddling conditions.
What about changing the routine completely and paddling through the night and sleeping during the day.
Avoids having to cover up from the sun and you should be less fatigued from a hard paddle in the cool of the night
You have both done the Hawkesbury and know how enjoyable that is.
Might take a few days to adapt to the changeover of routine.
Main risk as I see it is being unable to sleep properly during the hot days.
Just a thought hope it helps.
Well done on almost reaching the 160E, should be through by mid morning.
    Strength to you both

If the desal is drawing too much power then an upturned sprayskirt can act as an excellent funnel for collecting rain water! Try to hang it in front of the cabin and somehow feed the water into you watertank(s). The part of the sprayskirt which goes round your waist will act as the stem of the funnel.

Patrick ,it has just come to me,what light do the rats have of a night time ? i should think that there would be a lot of fishing boats running out there of a night time?
that kayak is not like its sitting 6 feet out of the water
the only one iI have been in is the wire netting one ,up that well known creek!
Patrick has enough on his plate , could somebody please explain the lights ,

Is it possible to see the progress mapped against the waypoints and get more information about the wind direction, seas and currents both actual and predicted

We are working on ways to include data for wind and currents for your viewing pleasure, but we still have a ways to go before it is working. gregk, continuing to follow your progress with interest.

    TigerBaby,
We are aware of the error message issue you have encountered. This is a known problem with certain browsers. Our suggestion is to refresh the page (Ctrl-R) or close the page and re-open it. Thanks for your suggestions, we will try and incorporate some of them soon.

    Juha,
Not sure what you mean by progress against the waypoints?

Sorry for not being involved with the forum discussion until now, efforts have been going into getting the map 'live' on the main Crossing the Ditch page.

Luke and Pat: What does your weather expert think about the (supposed) arrival of La Nina, and does he think it will effect the boys? Ralph who is rowing across the Pacific had to stop at Figi because of the current reversal. Erden who is also crossing is having a very difficult time with counter currents and wind - not sure if he is aware of Ralph. I've tried to contact Erden a few times, but to no avail. If it is really La Nina, then it should help the rats (but I think the current may be more toward the North - not sure).

the snail trail & associated data at check points is good, but if possible could this be overlaid with past, current & projected ocean currents to explain drifts & headings of the boys, as you were able to do for the first couple of days of their expadition.

    Route Efficiency:

What is this number. Seems like a 1.0 indicates that the kayak traveled in a straight line from pt A to pt B. Do you use this metric for anything. Or is just something to calculate.

Seems like a metric of use, would be how far the kayak is from your projected path, between skeduled course changes.

    Very Curious.

    Tigerbaby,

Route efficiency is calculated as a ratio of the distance travelled for the day to the straight line distance between start and finish for the day. Basically an indicator of how much return for the day's effort. We are using the overall efficiency to estimate the finish time (in combination with average speed and distance to go). Projected path can change without notice depending on the conditions the the boys are facing, so it is difficult to determine efficiency based on these parameters. Hope this helps.

    Hi Folks,

Great website, great adventure! I am an expert in solar energy systems and energy efficiency. I am a bit concerned about reports that suggest a lack of power from the photovoltaic cells installed on Lot 41. Can anyone tell me what is the installed capacity (in watts)? Mono or polycrystalline? What type of batteries are being used? I imagine either VRLA gel cells (sealed lead acid) or some form of lithium polymer cells? How many amp-hours of storage on board? Lead acid batteries can be severely damaged by very deep (> 80%) discharge, so it is very important to shed load (switch things off!) if the batteries are running low, especially under conditions of restricted sunshine. Sadly, even the best solar cells have greatly reduced output under overcast conditions. What type of charge regulator is being used, and does it have a multi-stage charge program?

I imagine the desalination system would be the greatest electrical load. What is its power rating (continuous and peak rating in watts)? How many watt-hours would it consume for 10 litres of desal water per day? Is the failure of the desal system due to lack of available power, or some other problem?

If anyone would care to answer these questions, I would be happy to help.

    Best regards,

    -Dr Baz.

Any chance of posting the data in nautical terms, please?
i.e Lat and Long in Degrees, Minutes and Seconds instead of Degrees and decimals.
Great Circle course and distance calculators won't accept decimals.
And distances and speeds in NM's and Knots?
    More logical to relate to.
    Thanks.
  11.
    Hi Steveold

We started to track Crossing the Ditch in nautical terms and we had an overwhelming response from the supporters to go for distance and speed measures that the 'average Australian' understands at face value. We actually designed our mapping platform (called RUSH) to work primarily in knots and nautical miles but James and Justin asked us specifically to use kilometres.

Try searching for a distance or location converter on Google. Heaps available.

that the world is behind you and your achievement at this time and spirit should be an example for every one.
Wishe you all the best, take care and be proud ,this will not be forgotten.

See that you are travelling slowly of late I havent checked for a few days, the weather this time of year is definately out of the ordinary. Too tropical and the humidity would probably be higher than normal out there too. One thing I have to say is how great it is to see two mates battling the odds on a once in a lifetime adventure. You are doing very well, those currents will come your way very soon. Try and rest as much as you can for a good push when it gets calm and make some major distance.

I am sure you will succeed, there is no turning back now and you sound in good spirits on your broadcast just gone. I have done some tactical courses where I felt I would never make it, just thinking about the others with me kept me moving forward. You two are motivating each other and inspiring a couple of cities with your stamina - Get mad. Get to the end. Get the glory!

The tracking info displaying on the website is now looking like gobble-dee-gok. Its unfortunate but the current situation is confusing supporters of the campaign. Supporters understand about technical challenges and lost data due to device or communications outages but any system worth its salt can always be corrected. Surely the tracking display has been designed so the table storing the tracking positions can be manually updated with the best guess for the real position at each point in time being referenced? So please just edit the entries in that table so they at least approximate the physical reality.

The act of putting two men in a tiny capsule and propelling them off over the horizon is one enormous responsibility. Putting up a website is quite a different one but its still a responsibility.
  13.
Thanks for the feedback Searoom. We are going to do exactly as you suggest tonight after we speak with the guys about the issues that they had. The data, although it may seem like gobble-dee-gok, actually may tell us a lot about what happened at that point in time and help the guys prevent a similair incident happening again. Cheers
  14.
I have to concur with Patrick, At TracPlus (the tracking data center) we have to treat all data coming off the terminal as absolute (i.e like bank records)
We have a filtering system in place that looks for erroneous GPS fixes (as these occur relatively regularly) and will filter them so that the particular GPS fix report will not show up in the data stream from now on, and therefore through onto Race Recon's website. However, those records will remain in the data-base and accessible to the client only, for further analysis, with a flag showing that it was considered out of the normal range.

Thanks Patrick and I can see from my probing that even under testing circumstances the campaign is holding it together. "Great" is whats really needed here, not mediocre efforts, there's no room for passengers in any department on this journey. So for the record, you and everyone else are doing a great job. You will know that Colin planned to take 30 days but it took him 63. Might want to change the voting options a bit.
  15.
Thanks Searoom. Please keep the feedback coming. With people like you telling us how it is, we will no doubt become bigger and better.

    Hi Patrick,

You are doing a fantastic job coordinating this amazing expedition. It would be great to see a synopsis of what has taken place over the last few days to give us a better understanding of what the Rats have had to endure. The latest chart of the currents plotting their path would also be interesting to analyse.

I was also interested in finding out what the situation was with the hull. Are their a lot of barnacles? Was the hull antifouled?

Keep up the good work. Everything about this journey is totally amazing. To bring the reality of it to the world is unbelievable.

    Thanks.
